Description: | An Anglo-Scandinavian horse harness cheek piece, originally c114mm long. Just over half the cheek piece now survives. The cheek piece originally comprised two flat side wings with a central hole into which the bridle bit would have been inserted. From between the two wings extends a short shaft with a rounded swelling. The shaft terminates in on oval loop with three short rounded proejctions. The form of the loop is typical of Anglo-Scandinavian harness fittings and links. The surviving side wing is in the form of a sinuous beast with its mouth open whose body curves inwards to face the central shaft and whose upper edge forms the edge of the surviving wing. From behind the head flares a group of tendrils. A similar head would have decorated the missing wing. Between the animals the decoration is less easy to describe as it is rather worn, but it may have comprised a pair of opposed spirals.
