Description: | A cast copper alloy incomplete purse bar of Medieval date. The object consists of one side bar which is circular in cross-section. At one end is a stylised animal head before the object terminates with an ancient break. The central block and opposite bar are missing. On the underside of the arm is an attachment plate with two circular perforations with an internal diameter of 1.75mm. At the opposite end of the side bar is the remains of the integral shaft on which the purse frame was suspended. It terminates with an ancient break. The side bar is decorated with niello-ornament of lattice pattern. This is a Type A1 purse bar (Ward-Perkins, 1940, p. 158-171). Ward-Perkins dates these purse bars to the late 15th century.A more complete example which can be found on the database is Basford, F (2009) IOW-C8DDD8 A MEDIEVAL PURSE Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/252192.
