Description: | This artificial silk collar was crocheted by Lady Swan for her husband Sir Joseph Swan. Joseph Swan (1828-1914) was famous for developing carbon filament light bulbs. In his search to find a better filament Swan experimented with squeezed nitrocellulose. The resulting artificial fibres were the basis for the development of artificial silk.
