Description: | engraving, John Scott, SOUTH SHIELDS
This is a model of a Shields pattern lifeboat, as used in the 1850s. It is a flat-bottomed, double-ended boat with seating for twelve rowers. The two 'bulges' along the sides are cork lining, which helped to keep the boat afloat. There are also two air chambers fore and aft. These make the boat extremely buoyant and give it its self-righting ability.
