Description: | A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Lucas van Leyden. The drawing shows Jesus, in the centre wearing a crown of thorns, carrying a large wooden cross. He is surrounded by a number of people. In the bottom left-hand corner a woman appears to be offering a cloth to him. A circular shield is carried by a figure in the top right. The image is very densely drawn, with lots of hatching and cross-hatching.
Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society:

LUCAS VAN LEYDEN
(b. 1494; d. 1533)
CHRIST BEARING THE CROSS
Collection of the Earl of Leicester, G.C.V.O., C.M.G., at Holkham Hall, Norfolk. Pen and bistre on white paper. 19.6 x 15.4 cm. (7 3/4 x 6 1/16 in.).
An original and interesting composition belonging to a rather later stage in the master's career. The white stem and cross-beam of the cross are used with striking effect in the arrangement of the design.
