Description: | A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Israel Silvestre. The drawing is a view of Paris across the river Seine. The grand building of the Louvre is on the bank on the left-hand side. A bridge, the Pont Neuf, spans the river, and many buildings are visible faintly behind this. There are several small boats on the river and on the bank in the foreground. The river, the sky and the roof of the Louvre are picked out in blue.
Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society:
"12.
ISRAEL SILVESTRE
(b. 1621; d. 1691)
A VIEW IN PARIS (THE SEINE AND THE LOUVRE)
Collection of Henry Oppenheimer, Esq. Pen and sepia, washed with sepia and blue. 16.5 x 33.5 cm. (6 1/2 x 13 3/16 in.).
A rare and attractive specimen of the pen and ink work of this talented follower of Callot, the author of many drawings of topographical subjects. In this drawing, the Louvre, with the Pavillon de Flore at the corner, is seen in the middle distance on the left; farther back the river is spanned by the Pont Neuf with the equestrian statue of Henri IV.
