PAOLO VERONESE
(b. 1530; d. 1588)
THE REPOSE IN EGYPT
British Museum, 1854-6-28-4. (from the Lely, Lawrence and Woodburn Collections.)
Modelled in white, with pen outline, on greenish grey prepared paper.
31.7 x 24.1 cm. (12 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.)
One of the class of drawings usually accepted as being by Veronese, and distinguished by singular beauty of handling and felicity in the use of materials. Probably a drawing made for its own sake rather than a study for a picture.
