Description: | A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Domenico Campagnola. The drawing shows a rural landscape with a town in the centre middle distance and mountains beyond. In the lower left of the composition is a group of sheep with two figures seated on the ground. Behind them a stream recesses back into the composition. In the centre foreground three figures carrying sticks and loads on their backs are approaching the landscape, heading towards the right. The town in the middle distance has several towers, a wall with battlements and a large water wheel. In the upper centre of the composition another architectural structure is visible; a series of walls of buildings with arches have been built against the side of the mountain.
Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society:
"No. 12
DOMENICO CAMPAGNOLA
(b. 1484, d. 1556)
LANDSCAPE
Collection of Mr. Edward Holland. Pen and bistre. 26 x 40.3 cm. (10 1/4 x 15 7/8 in.)
This very characteristic example of the master has a special interest as being a portion (with large strips cut away along the top and right side, and small strips along the bottom and left side) of the original drawing for one of his large signed woodcuts (Bartsch. No. 4). The woodcut and drawing are in the same direction and correspond almost exactly line for line, but the latter is much too free and spirited to be suspected for a copy, and it is probably that the drawing actually used by the wood-graver was traced from this and laid in reverse upon the block.
S. C."
