Description: | A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Andrea Mantegna. The drawing shows a bird standing on an arched structure in the form of a leaf. The bird is facing forwards but its head is turned to the right, and its beak is opened to receive a cluster of berries on a branch reaching into the composition from the right edge. The bird's left wing is also stretched out towards the right edge of the composition.

ANDREA MANTEGNA

STUDY OF ORNAMENT
Collection of the Hon. A. E. Gathorne-Hardy. (From the Richardson, sen., Dyce, and Robinson Collections.) Pen drawing in brown. 10.5 x 11.2 cm. (4 1/8 x 4 3/8 in.)
I would venture to ascribe this drawing to Mantegna; the diagonal shading coincides in its angle or direction with the lining in his genuine drawings; the branch on which the bird stands and the delicate spray with the berries show a crispness of execution and a sense of surface which is lacking in the minute and careful imitations and copies of his designs. The pen lines widen at the termination of the stroke, and the angle of the shading varies in places where it breaks over the forms. The reproduction has added a certain heaviness to the scale-like feathers. Possibly this sketch was executed after some antique fragment.
