His facial features are detailed, but his clothes are only loosely sketched in and there is no background detail. Cardinal Richelieu: very near to the engraving of the Cardinal, Montaiglon 320, in which, however, the head is turned more to the front, and the general effect is of a slightly younger, less harrassed man than here.
