Description: | A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Gaspar Dughet. The drawing is of a doorway, edged with bricks, with a sculpted man's head above it. Dense foliage surrounds the doorway, and steps lead up to it on either side. Two statues of figures stand on plinths to either side of the door. A rectangular stone with decorative carving is on the ground in front of the door. This drawing is on the same sheet as LC 1131/17.
Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society:
"16, 17.
GASPAR DUGHET (POUSSIN)
(b. 1613; d. 1675)
16. A GARDEN DOOR WITH ROMAN SCULPTURE
17. A VIEW OF TIVOLI
Collection of Lady Lucas. Pen and bistre and bistre wash, heightened with white, on blue paper.
(16) 17.7 x 22.8 cm. (6 15/16 x 8 15/16 in.).
(17) 16 x 23.9 cm. (6 5/16 x 9 3/8 in.).
These two sketches and a third, of the Lake of Albano, with a sketch of ruins in the Roman Campagna on the back, bore in the Wrest Park Collection, which descended to Lady Lucas in 1916, an old attribution to Gaspar Poussin. They might, otherwise, easily have been attributed to Claude, who drew sometimes on the same blue paper. An oil-stain in the paper, though fairly transparent in the original, greatly obscures in the reproduction the Temple of the Sibyl at Tivoli.
