Description: | A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Thomas Rowlandson. The drawing shows a long staircase which winds from the top to the bottom of the page. Drunken revellers line the banisters of the staircase, many of the in the act of falling down the stairs (and one over the banisters). A small crowd is gathered at the foot of the stairs. Many of the ladies wear tall feathers on their heads. Behind the staircase scene is an ornamental shelf with a decorative urn on it.
Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society:
"19.
THOMAS ROWLANDSON
(b. 1756; d. 1827)
A SOIRÉE AT THE ROYAL ACADEMY
Collection of Prof. Henry Tonks. Pen and wash. 40 x 27 cm. (15 3/4 x 10 5/8 in.).
Though the ostensible motive of this drawing is of a commonplace coarseness, the originality of the design, the light and witty penmanship make the essential impression one rather of grace and distinction. The staircase is in Somerset House, where the Royal Academy held its exhibitions from 1780 to 1838.
