The lady is dressed in white garments with a red jacket trimmed with white fur, one of her white shoes lies on the floor before her. The servant is dressed mainly in brown, with a bodice and a white shawl. A low wooden chair stands in bottom right corner, with a brush and cloth lying discarded on the seat, a hexagonal object on the floor nearby. Beneath an open window in background to left, is a table laid with a heavy red cloth on which sits a tall goblet and a book. A large painting of a shepherdess hangs on the wall in the background, with a black and gold wall clock to the right. In the background on the far right what appears to be the fishmonger stands in an open doorway, his arms crossed, wearing breeches and a wide brimmed hat.
