Description: | An incomplete cast copper alloy probable ate Roman - early Saxon 'amphora-shaped' strap end. The strap end has been broken in antiquity leaving only the tip of the strap end which consists of a sub-ovoid body, the top of which is flanked by two sub-oval chip carved knops. Between each sub-oval knops at the top edge the object terminates with an incomplete rectangular projection. The body of the object is decorated with a median band formed of conjoined punched dots. To one end the band has been punched with a deeper, larger dot. Two larger punched dots decorate the outer face to either side of the band. The rear of the object is undecorated. The object has a dark brown patina and is in fair condition. This is a Roman strap end associated with Roman military Dominate belt-furniture of the 4th century AD (see Bishop and Coulston, 1993: 175, fig. 126 nos. 7, 9, 12). The strap end is similar to that classified as a Narrow Amphora strap end (Appels & Laycock, 2007, 258) and they suggest that this style is more consistent with being British made.Similar examples which can be found on the database are Shoemark, J (2014) WILT-989C60 A ROMAN STRAP END Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/609090, Moss, J (2008) BUC-51A162 A ROMAN STRAP END Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/224189 and Stewart, G (2014) SF-D0AB53 A ROMAN STRAP END Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/611404.
