Description: | Treasure ref: 2003 T76: hoard of 60 copper-alloy sestertii and associated pottery found scattered over an area of 4 x 4m. This worn sestertius hoard is unusual in having one or two later/post-Severan issues. This is a feature one would expect only in the largest examples such as the Gare hoard (RBCH 530), the supply of new aes apparently drying up c. AD 197. In general it seems that the extremely worn bronze coinage from the first and second centuries formed the overwhelming bulk of the aes in circulation in Britain well into the third century (until such denominations disappear from circulation c. AD 270). Cowbit contains an as of Gordian III, thus narrowing down the potentially wide discrepancy between the date of the last coin and the possible deposition date which applies to most later sestertius hoards.32 additional coins were found in December 2004 (see Treasure ref. 2005 T49).Uncertain, but reign of Vespasian or Titus 1 Trajan 1 Hadrian 2 Antoninus Pius 1 Faustina I 1 Marcus Aurelius 1 Faustina II 2 (addenda) Commodus 1 Crispina 1 Uncertain Antonine Emperor 1 (addenda) Septimius Severus 1 Caracalla 1 Uncertain later Several Empress 1 Gordian III 1 Uncertain Emperor 47+29 (in addenda) Total 60 | Publisher: | http://finds.org.uk | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Identifier: | http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/r... | Go to resource |
