Description: | An incomplete copper alloy lock hasp, of Medieval dating (AD 1270 to AD 1400).Around 25 percent of the lock hasp is present, the rest is missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The front of the lock hasp terminates with a debased scallop shell. Above this, is a horizontal groove, extending into a rectangular bar, with bevelled edges. The reverse of the hasp exhibits a sub rectangular loop, with a circular hole. This hole has an internal diameter of 6.8 mm.The lock hasp measures 29.6 mm in length, 10.0 mm wide and 14.3 mm thick. It weighs 4.6 g.The hasp is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina.Hasps of this size and form would probably have been used to secure caskets and would have operated in conjunction with a lock-plate and sliding bolt mechanism.Excavated examples, all of iron, include some from contexts of c. 1270-c. 1450 in London (Egan 1998, p81-84,no 212-226) and others largely from 13th- and 14th-century contexts in York (Ottaway and Rogers 2002, 2842-4, particularly no. 12362 with animal head terminal). Several of the York examples have bent-up plates, suggesting that their lock-plates projected from the surface of the box.Several similar lock hasps have been recorded on the PAS database, although none with a scallop shell terminal. These records include:YORYM-9F8084;BH-15A307;WILT-AF6E80;SWYOR-3BB293;BH-56FB74;SWYOR-317086 andBH-3683C3.
