Description: | TREASURE CASE : 2015 T124.A complete silver ingot of Early-Medieval date. The ingot is sub-rectangular with a tapering sub-rectangular section and bevelled corners. The surface of the ingot is abraded and one clear nick is present through one edge. Either end of the ingot is rounded and fairly smooth showing that it has not been cut.Although ingots are traditionally difficult to date without a secure archaeological context they are often attributed to a Viking date. Ingots of similar styles are typical of the Viking period and are commonly found in Scandinavia, on the Continent, and within Britain where they generally date from the late 9th/10th century. Parallels for such ingots can be found in the Cuerdale Viking silver hoard from Lancashire which includes similar long, narrow examples was deposited circa 905-910 (J. Graham-Campbell, 2011, The Cuerdale Hoard and related Viking-Age silver and gold from Britain and Ireland in the British Museum, London, pl. 3, 1: 17-18). The nick-mark present on this example is also suggestive of an Early-Medieval date.Numerous similar objects have also been reported through the Treasure Act 1996 and recorded on the PAS database. For examples see: 2013T411 (WMID-C36B61), 2013 T8 (DENO-705A57) and 2011T283 (LANCUM-2A4584).Date:Early-Medieval: 9th - 10th CenturyDimensions:Length: 99.7mm; Width: 5.9mm - 4.2mm; Thickness: 5.8mm - 3.8mm; Weight 24.3g.Discussion:In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
