Description: | Medieval (13th century) seal matrix: The matrix is a variant of a flat-backed type which has a transverse, prominent, ridge on the reverse, which tapers in profile. At the widest terminal of the ridge, there is a circular perforation in the upper corner. In plan the matrix is a pointed oval. The underside of the matrix has a legend and central device. The legend, written in black letter, possibly reads 'maetici [ ]'. The device is a figure standing in profile, wearing a cowl, possibly with tonsured hair, with their left hand raised. They are stood in front of an altar. The figure is within an architectural niche with a pointed arch which has a series of knops on the exterior edge and interior. Beneath this niche, there is a second, shorter one, with a curved arch. Within this arch there is the upper half of a figure, facing forwards, with their hands together, possibly in prayer and possibly with tonsured hair. The surface of the matrix has a matte red/brown coloured surface with traces of a thin, dark green patina. The matrix measures 40.61mm long, 24.63mm wide and 19.76mm thick. It weighs 33.11g.This is probably an official clerical seal, most likely of a lesser clergy than a bishop seal of secular clergy, this is based on the figure being depicted is probably that of a saint. Harvey and McGuinness (1996:74) discusses these types of seal and the need for further research. They (1996: Figure 69) also illustrates a matrix with a similar layout and theme. A late thirteenth to fourteenth century date is suggested by the architectural style, but the as the overall dimensions and the prominent ridge and lug on the reverse is unusual compared to other Medieval matrices on the PAS database and in other references, it may date into the 15th century.Harvey, P.D.A. and McGuinness, A. 1996 A Guide to British Medieval Seals London: British Library and Public Record Office
