Description: | A complete copper alloy medieval seal matrix. It is oval (vesica shaped) with a raised ridge running longitudinally across the reverse and culminating in a small circular attachment loop at one end. The other face has the inscription '+ECCE AGNVS DEI' (behold the lamb of God) around the outside and the lamb of God bearing a standard in the centre.Harvey and McGuiness (1996, 79) suggest that this type of oval seal became popular in the early 13th century, particularly with women, but devotional inscriptions and images were also often favoured on matrices from the turn of the fourteenth century onwards, with the inscription 'Agnus Dei' a popular choice. Length: 33.41mm, width: 20.57mm, thickness: 7.21mm, weight: 8.34g
