Description: | Copper alloy gaming counter copying the gold 'spade' guinea of George III (1760-1820), so called because of the shape of the shield on the reverse. These copies were made from 1788, by a variety of manufacturers, mostly in Birmingham, and this counter is dated to 1794 on the reverse. This counter has since been perforated at about 1 o'clock on the obverse to be suspended as a pendant. Often the manufacturers are abbreviated in the reverse legends, but in this case, the legends are as they are found on the regal gold guineas. The obverse reads GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA.The reverse reads M B F ET H REX F D B ET L D S R I A T E T E which are Latin initials that translate to 'King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Luneburg, High Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire' (Fletcher, 2003, 81).Besly (1997) illustrates a similar example on page 43, fig.119, which has an arbitrary date of 1701 on the reverse, under the spade shield, but was made later at the end of the century
