Description: | A Medieval copper-alloy seal matrix. The matrix is pointed-oval in plan and of flat section, its die engraved with a central image and surrounding legend. This design depicts the Lamb of God, which stands to the right and faces back towards its tail, with the banner behind. The legend extends clockwise from 12 o'clock; it reads: + ECCE AGNVS DEI ('Behold, the Lamb of God'). A pair of beaded lines border the legend. A rounded loop handle with hourglass-shaped perforation is located at the top point of the reverse; a flat-topped, vertical ridge extends from its base, terminating at the bottom point.Height: 29.3mm; width: 17.4mm; depth (including loop): 7.4mm. Weight: 5.82g.Seal matrices bearing impersonal, often religious, legends date from around the 14th century, when the 'Lamb of God' is a typical theme (Harvey and McGuinness 1996: 89). The PAS database contains several parallels for this matrix, including SF-7BD57C and NARC-281800, the latter of which provides a useful discussion of the imagery.
