Description: | A complete copper alloy seal matrix of medieval date. The seal is a pointed oval or vessica shape with an integral lug set on a slightly raised central rib along the longitudinal axis of the reverse.The front face bears a central design depicting the Madonna facing forwards holding the Christ child seated under a canopy, with a supplicant kneeling before them facing left (described from impression).The inscription surrounding the motif reads: S' IOhIS : DE : CA[-]OLICI : FIL : OSB which translates as Seal of John of Ca[----]lici, Son of Osbert. the obscurred word is likely to represent a place name.The metal has a dark-green patina and is worn. The seal matrix is 27mm long, 17.2mm wide, 6.6mm thick and weighs 7.9g.Sealing was used for authenticating documents for around 300 years in medieval Britain.Seals with similar imagery have been recorded through the PAS such as IOW-EBAE48, LVPL-1E96DC and SWYOR-EB6F54.
