Description: | Copper alloy, Post Medieval, complete, French two sols of Louis XVI (AD 1773- AD 1792), dated probably 1792. The obverse depicts a Laureate draped bust left with the inscription [LO]UIS [XVI ROI DES FRANCOIS] 1792 [ ], the mint mark has been worn away. The reverse depicts a Fasces (cylindrical bundle of elm or birch rods bound together by bands with a Phrygian cap on top) between 2 S, with probable oak wreath surround, the inscription probably reads [LA NATION LA LOI LE R]OI/[L'AN 3 DE LA LIBERTÉ]. Mint: Unclear. Similar examples have been recorded in Scott (1913), p 90, No. 2, and Craig (1971), p 99, No 89. Other examples can be found on the database, including IOW-ACC557 and HAMP-98AA52.Diameter: 33.5mm.Thickness: 4.3 mmWeight: 25.4 g.The coin is heavily worn and detail is difficult to identify.References:Craig, W.D.
