Description: | Medieval (13th to 14th century) impersonal seal matrix: The copper alloy seal matrix has an oval die, with a tapering handle. The handle has a hexagonal cross section, and terminates with a trefoil suspension loop, which has a collar beneath. There are no marks on either of the six sides to aid orientation during use.The die depicts a standing female figure on the left of the impresseion. The figure is wearing headwear with is possibly a crown with flaring sides and a central stem. There is a headdress which is draped from the back of the crown and falls down her back. The female is holding a young child against her chest. In front of the female there is a second figure, who is kneeling with hands together in prayer. Above the kneeling figure there is a star or wheel motif. Both figures are positioned on a horizontal bar which has three fine V's beneath. The figures and platform are all surrounded by an oval, deep border consisting of quatrefoils and possibly pellets. The legend surrounds the device and starts with a star and reads PROTEGE [ ]VS [ ]GOT MA[ ].The surface of the matrix has a dark green-grey patina which is slightly abraded. Some of the edges of the die also demonstrate a degree of abrasion, and roughening around the edges. The die is discoloured with possibly clay from a recent impression or coating. The seal matrix measures 30.28mm tall, 26.88mm wide and 20.87mm across the die at the base and weighs 19.63g.The matrix is probably an impersonal matrix, as it does not appear to mention an individual, but this is not certain. The die depicts an image of the Virgin and Child (Mary and Jesus). With the depiction of Mary with child and a supplicant may suggest it potentially has an ecclesiastical association if it were a personal matrix, similar to the archdeacon seals that appear from the 13th century onwards (Harvey and McGuinness, 1996: 75).Harvey, P.D.A. and McGuinness, A. 1996 A Guide to British Medieval Seals London: British Library and Public Record Office
