Description: | A complete but worn cast copper alloy seal matrix of medieval date. The seal matrix is vesica shaped (pointed oval) in plan with an integrally cast suspension loop at the top of the reverse. The face of the matrix bears an image of the Lamb of God in the centre, which stands to the right and faces back towards its tail, with a banner behind. A religious devotion runs clockwise around the outer edge, reading '+ ECCE AGNVS DEI' ('Behold, the Lamb of God').Seal matrices bearing impersonal, often religious legends, date from around the 14th century, when the 'Lamb of God' is a typical theme (Harvey and McGuinness 1996: 89). The PAS database contains several parallels for this matrix, including another from Oxfordshire (BH-D81001).
