Description: | A complete copper alloy Seal Matrix of Medieval date (AD 1300-1400). The seal matrix has a circular die, with a tapering handle. The handle has a hexagonal cross section, and terminates with a complete sub-trefoil suspension loop, which has a collar beneath.The die bears the image of a cockerel facing right, which faces left as an impression. The legend reads '* COV ME DAIY' which is probably translated as 'Crow me day', possibly a Medieval joke. The metal is a dark brown in colour with a smooth and uncorroded patina.Similar examples can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Database: WILT-34BEA2, WAW-A7F923 and SF-6FB704.Height: 23.32mm, Diameter (of base): 17.77mm, Thickness (of shaft): 5.17mm, Weight: 8.0g.
